Whether you are a Richmond Virginia local or you happen to be in the Richmond area, check out The Shack Band, a funk-rock band originally stationed in Blacksburg and now rocking in RVA.
What originally started as an organic, impromptu and free-flowing collection of musicians casually performing in the renovated remains of a dilapidated shack in Blacksburg, Va. has morphed into The Shack Band. The band has relocated from Blacksburg to Richmond, Va., and established a consistent lineup comprised of Mason Owen (Bass), Andrew Gillespie (Keyboard,) Hunter Pease (Guitar), and Bobby Hudson (Drums). At the start of 2013 the quartet became a quintet with the addition of a saxophonist Josh Crowley. The addition of a horn has added a complexity to the group’s arrangements as well as deep texture to the band’s already well-established funk rock sound.
The group’s songwriting abilities and sensibilities have matured over the last couple of years resulting in the release of the group’s first EP In February of 2012. Born & Raised, was released to a sold-out crowd (with a long line waiting to get in) at The Camel in Richmond, Va.. The group continues to write new material for their second release which will be their first full length CD.
For 2013, the goals are simple yet ambitious: hit the rarefied level of 200 plus live shows, release their first full-length album, and continue to hone their craft while writing and learning new material. The one thing that will never waver is The Shack Band’s intent to wow new crowds with their high-energy live shows that meld funky rock ‘n’ roll with soaring harmonies.
In 2012 alone, The Shack Band played 120 plus shows along the East Coast and as far west as Chicago, while performing alongside a number of national touring acts, including: moe., Moon Taxi, The Machine, Perpetual Groove, The Pimps of Joytime, The Heavy Pets, and Dangermuffin among others.
Thanks to their raw, infectious live shows and incessant touring, The Shack Band have seen, felt, and heard the effects of their budding reputation and burgeoning fan base.
